Tips for Car Interior Detailing and Maintenance
Let’s face it, maintaining a car is a lot of work, especially if you rely on your car to get yourself to work daily, use it for grocery runs, fetch your children to school, and a host of other tasks that requires you to drive in Singapore.
With such wear and tear, it should not come as a surprise that your car condition begins to deteriorate over time. Hence, the need for regular car maintenance. From the exterior to the interior aspect as well as the internal engine and whatnot.
While owning a car generally requires you to be vigilant no matter where you are, you will need to pay extra attention to maintaining your car’s interior and keeping it clean always. This is because cleaning the interior of a car is not as easy as it seems.
There are many different types of surfaces and materials to clean. Here are some tips that will help you keep your car looking new.
- Thoroughly vacuum the car interior
- Carefully clean the seats
- Use a steam-cleaning machine
- Apply interior cleaner
- Clean the A/C vents
1. Thoroughly vacuum the car interior
Before you go full on a cleaning mode, you will need to get rid of all the dust and dirt from hard-to-reach areas in your car’s interior using a good quality vacuum cleaner. This is important because a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle can help you to easily remove the dirt and dust without causing you much problem.
Work from the top down so that the substances that spill and fall throughout your cleaning process can be sucked by the vacuum when you clean the carpet and seats. Remove the carpets and mats, then use a brush attachment to vacuum them to remove loose dirt and dust particles.
2. Carefully clean the seats
There are three main types of material used for car seats – leather, vinyl, and cloth, each requiring different cleaning methods. When you clean your seats, you should always use the right cleaning material.
For instance, if you have leather seats, use a good leather cleaning product to clean the seats. Make sure to use a microfibre towel to dry the seats afterwards. Vinyl seats are easier to clean as you can use a glass cleaner and microfibre towel to do the job.
On the contrary, cloth upholstery is a bit more tedious when it comes to cleaning. You will need to ask yourself a few questions. Are there any tough stains you want to get rid of? Do the seats require general cleaning or do you need to get rid of nasty odours? These will help you decide on the type of cleaning product and method you use.
3. Use a steam-cleaning machine
If you often bring your pet on rides or smoke in the car, mould and mildew can develop over time emitting unpleasant odours that tend to stick to your car’s interior surfaces. With a steam-cleaning machine, it can help eliminate the odour, leaving your car smelling fresh and clean.
Besides, it offers better cleaning abilities as the hot steam vapour penetrates the pores of your car interior, cleaning the insides more thoroughly than a regular vacuum cleaner. This is also the reason why the fabrics in your car, especially your seats, will look cleaner and brighter after being steam-cleaned.
4. Apply interior cleaner
There are various car interior detailing products available on the market, especially when it comes to cleaning glass surfaces. Before you use the product, make sure you are cleaning glass and not plastic. This is because you can use an all-purpose cleaner for plastic surfaces whereas you need a glass cleaner for glass surfaces.
If your windows are tinted, you will need to be even more cautious as some tinting can be part of the window while others are a sheet applied to your windows. The latter are easily damaged by cleaning products, especially those that contain ammonia.
When you clean the windows and mirrors, make sure to spray the cleaner on the cloth instead of the glass itself. This will reduce streaking and avoid the harsh chemicals from damaging other parts of your car.
5. Clean the A/C vents
The A/C vents need more than just a quick wipe down because it simply is not enough to clean the surfaces when you are detailing your car interior. You will need to clean in between the slats which could be a potential breeding site for moulds and mildew. Otherwise, you will have to put up with a musty smell, which can be unpleasant over time.
You can use a foam or sponge brush to access the hard-to-reach places of your A/C vents. By using any of these supplies, you won’t cause any scratch to it or damage the vents while cleaning. Make sure to be as gentle as possible as the slats can be fragile at times.
