How to Disinfect a Car to Prevent Germs and Bacterial Growth
Who would have thought that we would depend so much on soaps, alcohol-based sanitisers or disinfectants to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, and even viruses?
This is all due to the COVID-19 global outbreak as the coronavirus has been shown to survive for hours to days on various surfaces. Since then, we have learnt that disinfecting our homes, cars, and business premises has become crucial in preventing the coronavirus from spreading.
Having said that, disinfecting or sanitising your car is far more tedious than cleaning and disinfecting your home or office due to the many types of surfaces and all the crevices and openings.
The interior surfaces of your car are also not made to withstand a constant onslaught of cleaning products. This is where car interior detailing services come in – to help clean and disinfect your car without damaging the surface.
However, if you prefer to disinfect your car yourself, here are some tips along with ways to kill germs and bacteria without damaging the interior surface of your car.
How to sanitise your car to make it safer after exposure
If you had many people entering and exiting your car throughout the day, you will need to sanitise commonly touched surfaces to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, and viruses. It’s even more important if you’re a driver for a rideshare or taxi company. Here are four tips to sanitise your car to prevent potential spread.
1. Keep the doors and windows open while you disinfect
Cleaning and disinfecting your home is much easier given that there’s plenty of space for particles to move about without irritating your eyes and throat. Your car, on the other hand, will require you to keep the doors and windows open while you disinfect the cabin due to limited space and some cleaning products can cause skin irritation.
2. Use suitable cleaning and sanitising products
Products containing bleach and hydrogen peroxide may be effective at killing viruses, but they can damage your car’s upholstery and leather. You should instead use soap and water, and alcohol solutions that contain at least 70% Isopropyl alcohol as they can disrupt the viral membranes and kill the viruses upon contact.
3. Gather your cleaning supplies
Other than keeping your doors and windows open and using suitable disinfecting products, you will need to gather your cleaning supplies such as gloves, a mask, a vacuum, wet wipes, microfiber cloths, a bucket, a brush, window/glass cleaner, and leather conditioner (if you have leather seats) to make your car disinfection easier.
4. Incorporate steam cleaning
Getting your car steam-cleaned is another way of disinfecting your car. The powerful steam emission with high-temperature steam, powerful nozzles and highly heated cleaning cloths ensure that the steam eliminates 99.99% of all common bacteria on hard surfaces, giving your car interior a deep clean.
Steps to disinfecting your car without damaging the surfaces
There’s no doubt that cleaning and disinfecting your car is a lot more tedious but it will all be worthwhile, especially in this new norm. Follow the steps below to sanitise your car thoroughly:
1. Wash your hands and put on your gloves. You should also wear a face mask and eye goggles as you clean the interiors of your car to protect against dust irritation, chemical inhalation, and potential virus exposure.
2. Remove all floor mats and vacuum all of the crevices and openings in your car. This will help to remove dirt and debris, giving you a slightly cleaner surface to work with.
3. Mix soap and warm water in a bucket and dip your microfiber cloth into the solution. Wipe down your seats thoroughly but avoid over-saturating your upholstery or leather with the solution as too much water can seep into the cushions and cause mold to grow.
4. Use a moistened soft cloth to clean up dirt, dust, and anything sticky from other surfaces of your car. Make sure to wipe them dry.
5. Dip another microfiber cloth in 70% Isopropyl alcohol or use alcohol-based wipes to wipe down high-touch surfaces such as the steering wheel, knobs, handles, levers, etc.).
6. Leave your car interior to dry for 5-10 minutes. Then disinfect the windows and mirrors with soap and water or alcohol. You can use a window/glass cleaner after that and wipe clean with a microfiber cloth.
7. Dispose of your gloves and face mask, and clean your goggles once you’re done disinfecting your car. Wash your hands with soap and water, and change into new clothes.
