Debunking 5 Myths on Ceramic Coating

Are you considering ceramic coating on your car after hearing that it’s a popular car coating choice? It is often recommended as a car paint protection against scratches and dents, offering vehicles the strongest form of paint protection.

The low maintenance cost is also why ceramic coating is widely preferred by many car enthusiasts and owners alike in Singapore. Once applied to your car’s paintwork, the coating creates an additional hydrophobic layer of protection, leaving the paintwork untouched.

However, some myths are circulating about the use of ceramic coating on cars in the region. And this article aims to debunk these myths and provide aspiring car owners like you with the facts about ceramic coating and its durability.

Myth 1: Ceramic coatings are scratch-proof

This is one of the biggest myths about ceramic coatings. Like most man-made creations, ceramic coating cannot protect your car’s paintwork from being scratched. Although it is a silicon dioxide (SiO2) based solution that can blend with your car’s paintwork, ceramic coatings are still susceptible to scratches.

Depending on where you see the scratches, whether in your garage or a shaded area, you won’t see the actual condition of your vehicle’s paintwork unless you’re under direct sunlight or you use an inspection light.

That said, deep scratches are easy to spot whether in the shade or under direct sunlight. But, it’s more challenging to spot shallow scratches if you’re inspecting your car’s paintwork in the shade. The ones you see under direct sunlight are swirl marks, which appear with improper washing using non-microfibre towels.

Myth 2: No maintenance is needed for ceramic-coated cars

Another common misconception is that no maintenance is required once your vehicle is ceramic-coated. Much like keeping your car interior clean, you still need to wash the exterior regularly to maintain the gleam of your ceramic-coated car.

At the same time, it helps to prevent excessive build-up of contaminants like dirt and dust at microscopic levels, which can give you the impression that your car is clean, but it actually isn’t.

The hydrophobic nature of ceramic coating may help to repel water off the surface of your car’s paintwork. However, it can still contain minerals and soluble particles that will stay on the surface once the water evaporates. When this happens, you will need a hands-on approach to remove the water spots.

Myth 3: Ceramic coatings are permanent

Nothing in life is permanent. Your car’s paintwork will fade over time for various reasons, and it depends on what you have been doing to maintain its showroom appearance. The same goes for ceramic coatings.

Once the coating is applied to your car’s paintwork, the inorganic compounds of this silica dioxide (SiO2) based solution will bond with the car paint to form a crystal-clear shell, which becomes a semi-permanent paint sealant.

The silica-based solution may blend well with your vehicle’s paintwork to protect it against external damage but only for a particular duration. Depending on the life expectancy of the ceramic coating, most ceramic coatings can last between two and five years.

Myth 4: No chemical reaction on ceramic-coated cars

Almost everything has a chemical reaction, including your ceramic-coated cars. However, this usually occurs when acidic contaminants such as bird droppings are left to linger. This will eventually ruin even the strongest ceramic coating and bonds with your car’s paintwork.

Using the wrong kind of car shampoo for your ceramic-coated car can also cause a layer of the coating to lose its water-repelling capabilities, making the coating appear hazy or cloudy.

So, to remove most chemicals from your ceramic-coated car, you will need a high-quality ceramic coating shampoo and a suitable wash towel using the two-bucket car wash method to clean the exterior of your vehicle. Wipe with a quality microfibre towel to prevent water spots from forming.

Myth 5: No prep work is required for new cars

There’s no such thing as a completely clean car. New cars look clean because they were cleaned before being handed over to their owners. Even if you just received your car from the dealer, there may be some swirl marks on the car’s paintwork, which are removable with a proper car wash.

In fact, before the auto-detailers coat your car, they will likely prep your vehicle for the ceramic coating to ensure that it bonds well with your car paint. This includes washing and drying your car exterior before coating it with ceramic.

Besides, prep work is key to obtaining and maintaining a ceramic coating’s performance and long-lasting perks. So, prepare your car before getting it coated with ceramic.
