Fact 1: Windshield wipers should not be spreading water around

If your wipers are spreading water around your windshield instead of removing it from view entirely, it means that they need to be replaced. This is usually an indicator that your wipers are worn and dirty. If you see that water is only being smeared in one direction, this could also mean that your blades are hard or is the wrong size for your windshield.

These problems can be solved easily by maintaining regular checks on your wipers and replacing them regularly.

Fact 2: Using your wipers less doesn’t mean it’ll wear out slower

Keeping your wipers dormant may seem like you’re prolonging its service life by reducing its usage. Even though wipers will get worn out due to the friction it experiences when it makes contact with your windshield, that is not all that wears out your wipers. In reality, the wipers’ exposure to the outside is already affecting it.

Singapore’s hot tropical climate makes for more frequent checks on your wipers. Always inspect your wipers when you haven’t used them for several weeks.

Fact 3: Clean off dirt and dust manually

Although your wipers are designed to keep your windshield clean by swiping off water and dirt, sometimes it’s better to rely on your own set of hands. Dust and dirt trapped on both your wiper and windshield may scratch and smear the latter when using a wiper.

Use a wet cloth or paper towel instead to remove dirt, dust from your wiper blades. For your windshield, use some glass cleaner and a microfiber towel to remove grime and dirt. These precautions will also extend the life of your wiper blades.

Fact 4: You should change your wiper blades 1 to 2 times a year

Squeaky, scraping noises, streaks, and smudge on your windshield are perfect indicators of when to change your wiper blades. Your rubber blades may also display signs of fraying and cracking. Even after noticing these problems, drivers may still avoid replacing them as they would still work fine in rainy weather.

Replacing your wiper blades frequently reduces risks of accidents occuring. Replacing your wiper blades also mean enhanced visibility on the road. Anytime you replace your wiper blades, be sure to change both your front and rear blades together!

Fact 5: Intermittent settings are the way to go

Unsure if you should keep your wiper speed slow or fast? Apart from being in heavy rain, intermittent wiper settings should be kept in the event of light rain and drizzle. Constant, fast wiping dries out the windshield and causes blades to stick and squeak as the rubber drags across the screen. Further complicating matters is the fact that as your car speeds up and slows down, the amount of water hitting the windshield changes.

Some manufacturers have conquered this problem by providing intermittent wiper settings. Operating at timed intervals, intermittent wiping would not affect your visibility on the road as it sweeps across your screen occasionally.
